Child Safeguarding Policy

1. Policy Statement

  • Wroughton & Wichelstowe Football Club (WWFC) is fully committed to safeguarding the welfare of all children and young people.
  • We recognise our legal and moral responsibility under UK legislation including the Children Acts 1989 & 2004.
  • We adhere to The FA safeguarding policies and Wiltshire FA guidance.
  • The welfare of the child is always the paramount consideration.
  • We aim to create a safe, fun, and inclusive football environment for all participants.

2. Scope

  • This policy applies to all children under 18 involved in club activities.
  • It covers league teams, adult teams involving minors, sessional football, and pan-disability football.
  • It applies to all staff, volunteers, coaches, parents, and players.
  • It applies at training, matches, tournaments, events, trips, and online environments.

3. Key Principles

  • Children’s welfare is the first priority.
  • All children have a right to protection from abuse regardless of background.
  • Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
  • We promote inclusion and equal opportunity.
  • Concerns will always be taken seriously and acted upon.

4. Safeguarding Structure

  • WWFC Club Welfare Officers: Dave Hunt & Sophie Lambert.
  • CWO email: wyfcwelfare@gmail.com.
  • The CWO is responsible for managing concerns and liaising with Wiltshire FA.
  • All concerns must be reported through the CWO unless inappropriate to do so.
  • Records of concerns are stored securely and confidentially.

5. Safer Recruitment

  • All relevant roles require DBS checks.
  • Coaches must complete the England FA Safeguarding Children training course and hold a valid certificate.
  • References and identity checks are carried out.
  • Volunteers understand their safeguarding responsibilities before starting.

6. Codes of Conduct

  • All members must respect others and promote fair play.
  • No abusive, bullying, or discriminatory behaviour will be tolerated.
  • Adults must maintain appropriate boundaries with children.
  • Breaches may lead to suspension or removal.

7. Good Practice

  • Always work in open environments.
  • Avoid being alone with a child where possible.
  • Use appropriate communication channels and avoid private messaging.
  • Ensure correct supervision ratios.
  • Gain parental consent for activities and media.

8. Recognising Abuse

  • Physical abuse: harm or injury.
  • Emotional abuse: persistent emotional harm.
  • Sexual abuse: inappropriate sexual behaviour.
  • Neglect: failure to meet basic needs.
  • Other risks include bullying, grooming, and online abuse.

9. Reporting Concerns

  • Ensure immediate safety of the child.
  • Report to the Club Welfare Officer immediately.
  • Record facts clearly and avoid assumptions.
  • Do not investigate concerns yourself.
  • In an emergency call 999. NSPCC: 0808 800 5000.

10. Managing Allegations

  • All allegations are taken seriously.
  • Allegations are reported to the Wiltshire FA safeguarding officer.
  • Matters are handled confidentially and fairly.
  • Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken if required.

11. Online Safety

  • Use official communication channels only.
  • No direct one-to-one messaging with children.
  • Social media must be appropriate and monitored.
  • Consent is required for photos and videos.

12. Inclusion & Disability

  • We provide inclusive opportunities for all abilities.
  • Pan-disability football is supported.
  • Reasonable adjustments are made where needed.
  • Additional safeguarding awareness is applied for vulnerable players.

13. Health & Safety

  • Risk assessments are conducted.
  • Qualified first aiders are present.
  • Safe facilities and equipment are maintained.
  • Supervision ratios are adhered to.

14. Policy Review

  • The policy is reviewed annually.
  • It is updated following FA or legal changes.
  • It is reviewed after any safeguarding incident.
